Linzi Bell, a 46-year-old explorer from Brightlingsea, Essex, has made history by becoming the first recorded person to walk the entire British coastline—an incredible 7,178 miles (11,552 kilometers). Her monumental 298-day challenge began on March 1 in Greenwich and concluded this Monday, earning her a unique place in the record books.

What makes Bell’s accomplishment truly stand out is her commitment to navigating the coastline entirely on foot, avoiding ferries and instead walking up countless estuaries to remain true to the challenge. Over the course of her trek, Bell walked the equivalent of more than 270 marathons, allowing herself just three “rest days” each month. On these days, she indulged in “being horizontal and eating a lot of lovely food.”

Bell’s motivation extended far beyond personal achievement. She raised an inspiring £13,000 for mental health charity Mind and National Trails, which maintains England and Wales’ sprawling trail systems.

But for Bell, the physical feat wasn’t the only highlight of the experience. Throughout her odyssey, she crossed paths with hundreds of kind-hearted individuals who offered her safe places to rest and warm hospitality. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “I have met so many beautiful people who have treated me with nothing but kindness every single day.”

Having taken up hiking to combat the monotony of pandemic lockdowns, Bell is no stranger to ambitious treks. She’s previously walked from France to Spain. However, this coastal venture proved to be her greatest challenge yet.

Bell’s favorite part of the expedition? The “truly remarkable” West Highlands of Scotland. She described it as a place where “nature is thriving,” cementing it as her most cherished memory from the demanding yet exhilarating challenge.

This extraordinary achievement not only highlights Bell’s determination but also brings attention to causes close to her heart. Her story is a reminder of the power of human endurance, kindness, and the beauty that the British coastline has to offer.
