An 18-year-old man has died after crashing a stolen car into a wall during a brief police pursuit in Sheffield city center, police have confirmed.

The incident began at approximately 1:00 PM GMT on Monday when South Yorkshire Police officers spotted the driver of a black Ford Fiesta on Hyde Park Walk and attempted to approach the vehicle. Reacting to the presence of law enforcement, the man reportedly “attempted to flee the scene,” prompting a pursuit, police stated.

The car hit a wall on East Bank Road shortly after the chase began. Emergency services rushed the man—suspected of driving a stolen vehicle—to a nearby hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Following the fatal crash, South Yorkshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is standard procedure in cases involving police pursuits.

Appeal for Witnesses and Evidence

Authorities are actively appealing for anyone with information about the incident, particularly those who may have dashcam or CCTV footage of the chase or the surrounding area during the time of the crash.

South Yorkshire Police are focusing on individuals who were in the City Road, Park Grange Road, Spring Lane, and Northern Avenue areas at the time of the police pursuit. Officers urge anyone with relevant details or video evidence to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.

East Bank Road, which had been temporarily closed to allow officers to conduct investigation work, has now reopened to regular traffic.

A Community Left Shocked

The tragic incident has left the Sheffield community in disbelief, as residents reflect on the dangers of high-speed chases and stolen vehicle incidents. Police continue to stress the importance of public safety while balancing the need for immediate action during criminal pursuits.
