A tragic incident has unfolded on the serene waters of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Luke Walford, a 40-year-old school chaplain and youth pastor, lost his life after being attacked by a shark in the waters near Humpy Island on Saturday afternoon.
Walford had been spearfishing with his family in the picturesque Keppel Bay Islands National Park, a renowned destination for snorkelers and divers, when the attack occurred. Despite immediate medical intervention by paramedics, Walford succumbed to his injuries at the scene, officials reported.
A Beloved Community Figure
Luke Walford served as a school chaplain and pastor at the Cathedral of Praise church in Rockhampton, Queensland. Known for his dedication to helping others and his unwavering faith, Walford left a deep mark on his community.
Donna Kirkland, a local MP and a friend of Walford, shared her heartbreak over the tragedy. “My prayers and heartfelt condolences are with his beautiful family and, indeed, the many who will be devastated, as I am, at this news,” Kirkland stated, describing him as a cherished friend to countless people.
Doug Webber, a family friend, recounted the moment he saw the rescue helicopter pass overhead, unaware of its devastating mission. “I always say a little tribute for whoever it may be, but to find out it was Luke was a very sad day,” Webber told ABC News.
A Devastating Loss
The attack highlights the ongoing risks in Australian waters, a region that has recorded the second-highest number of shark incidents globally, only behind the United States. While fatal shark attacks remain rare, the nation has already seen four shark-related incidents this year. The last fatality, before Walford’s, occurred in December 2023, when a teenage boy was killed.
Authorities confirmed that a report on the incident will be prepared for the coroner while the community grieves the loss of one of their own.
Walford’s untimely passing serves as a stark reminder of both the beauty and danger of nature, leaving behind a grieving family, a heartbroken community, and a legacy of compassion and faith.
