Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Christmas Day Car Rampage in London

A 30-year-old man has been charged with four counts of attempted murder after four pedestrians were hit by a car traveling on the wrong side of the road in London’s Shaftesbury Avenue, Soho, during the early hours of Christmas Day. One person remains in critical condition in the hospital.

The shocking incident occurred in the heart of London’s West End theater district at 00:45 GMT on Wednesday. According to authorities, the vehicle involved was driving dangerously on the wrong side of the road before striking multiple pedestrians.

The suspect, identified as Anthony Gilheaney, has also been charged with causing serious injury by driving while disqualified, driving a vehicle dangerously, and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy described the incident as a “violent attack” and confirmed that the suspect had been apprehended within minutes of the event. “Our thoughts now are with the victims, one of whom remains in critical condition in the hospital,” Cundy said in a statement.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, providing aid to the victims and ensuring public safety in the bustling theater district.

Gilheaney is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where he will face the charges listed against him.

This incident has raised concerns about public safety during the festive season, particularly in one of London’s busiest areas. London police have since assured residents and visitors that they are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the public.
