Fleetwood Town has named Pete Wild, former manager of Oldham Athletic, Halifax Town, and Barrow, as their new head coach. The 40-year-old takes over following the departure of Charlie Adam, who left after a poor run of results. Wild has signed an undisclosed-length deal with the League Two side and will officially assume his role on December 27. Current first-team coach Matt Lawlor will oversee the Boxing Day game against Chesterfield.
Speaking to the club’s website, Wild expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I am really excited to have the opportunity to manage such a progressive football club. Discussions have moved quickly, and both myself and [assistant] Adam [Temple] feel there’s a clear direction from everyone at the club. We can’t wait to bring everyone—fans, staff, and players—together and move forward.”
Fleetwood parted ways with Charlie Adam after a year in charge. Adam’s tenure was marred by a disappointing run of just one win in 11 league games and a first-round FA Cup exit to Reading. The former Liverpool midfielder, who stepped into management after replacing Lee Johnson on New Year’s Eve 2023, was unable to prevent Fleetwood’s relegation to League Two last season. The team currently sits 18th in the table, eight points above the relegation zone.
Fleetwood owner Jamie Pilley explained the decision to appoint Wild, highlighting his knowledge of League Two as a key factor. “At this point, we felt it was important to bring in someone with extensive knowledge of the division we find ourselves in—Pete was the standout candidate,” Pilley stated.
This marks Wild’s return to management after leaving Barrow in the summer. Under his leadership, Barrow narrowly missed out on the play-offs during the 2022-2023 campaign. Fleetwood fans now hope Wild’s expertise and experience will spark a turnaround for the Lancashire club.
Wild’s arrival represents a fresh start for Fleetwood Town, as the club aims to climb the League Two table and rebuild trust among its fan base.
